Officer Robbins was pursuing a motorist on his motorcycle through East Rock Park when he struck another oncoming car head-on. He had been a member of the police department for seven months.

On June 25, 1916 Officer Joseph T. Robbins was pursuing a motorist on his motorcycle through East Rock Park when he struck another oncoming car head-on. His speedometer locked at 56 mph.

He was only a member of the police department for seven months. He was survived by his wife, Catherine and two small children.
