Officer Shea stopped to assist a motorist who had broken down. As both worked on the car, another car came speeding down the street and struck the disabled car. Officer Shea was knocked under the car and later died from his injuries.

On October 19, 1919, Officer Patrick Shea stopped on Howard and Kimberly to assist a motorist who had broken down. As both worked on the car another car came down the street at a high rate of speed and struck the disabled car knocking the officer under the car. Officer Shea was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital but later died from his injuries.
