Sgt. Dingwall, a 19-year veteran of the Middletown Police Department, was attempting to stop a vehicle involved in a home burglary. The suspect's vehicle struck Sgt. Dingwall's cruiser, killing him.

At approximately noon on Friday, January 29, 2000, Sgt. George Ross Dingwall, a 19- year veteran of the Middletown Police Department was responding to a "suspicious vehicle" call in a private residence driveway. Upon arrival of Sgt. Dingwall and other officers, the vehicle, with two (2) male occupants, fled the area. It was quickly determined that a burglary had occurred at the home. Sgt. Dingwall and other officers of the Middletown Police Department attempted to stop the suspect vehicle. The suspects refused to stop for the police officers that were traveling south on Route 9, when their vehicle struck the cruiser operated by Sgt. Dingwall. As a result of the collision between the suspect’s vehicle and Sgt. Dingwall’s cruiser, he succumbed to the injuries. The Middletown Police Department apprehended the two suspects with the assistance of the Connecticut State Police.
