Special Agent Dietrich was assigned to the Protective Support Division under the Office of Protective Forces. While on a Presidential Protective assignment near Grand Cayman Island in the Bahamas, the helicopter in which he was flying suddenly lost altitude and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean.

Special Agent J. Clifford Dietrich was born in Port Chester, New York, on June 24, 1947. Prior to his appointment as a Special Agent on May 4, 1970, he served with the New Canaan, Connecticut Police Department. Upon joining the Secret Service, he was assigned to the New Haven Field Office. In July 1971 and May 1972, special Agent Dietrich received the Department of Treasury’s Adopted Suggestion Award.

On April 1, 1973, Special Agent Dietrich was assigned to the Protective Support Division under the Office of Protective Forces. While on a Presidential Protective assignment near Grand Cayman Island in the Bahamas, the helicopter in which Special Agent Dietrich was flying suddenly lost altitude and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, trapping Special Agent Dietrich inside.

He was survived by his wife and two daughters.
