Officer Durkin, who was assigned to the motorcycle patrol, was struck and killed by a car while on his motorcycle.

On November 2, 1918 Officer John E. Durkin, who was assigned to the motorcycle patrol, was operating his motorcycle in the area of Ferry and Exchange Streets located in the Fair Haven section when he was struck by a car driven by High McCahey of 337 Howard Ave. The officer was rushed to St Raphael’s Hospital where he later died. Officer Durkin was a widower but left one child. McCahey was charged with reckless driving.
