Patrolman Pych was in pursuit of a speeding motor vehicle when another motorist obstructed the road. To avoid a collision, the officer veered his patrol car off the highway. The cruiser rolled over and struck a tree, crushing him.

Patrolman Joseph Pych, age 36, a regular officer of the Enfield Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on December 25, 1954. While on cruiser patrol duty, and in pursuit of a speeding motor vehicle, another motorist obstructed the officers path of travel. To avoid a collision, the officer veered his patrol car off the highway. In doing this, the cruiser rolled over and struck a tree, whereby Patrolman Pych was crushed to death.

Patrolman Pych was appointed to the force June 2, 1953. He left his wife and two children.
