While checking his beat, Officer Cannon found an open door at the Hubinger Building on Chapel Street. He went into the darkened building to have the janitor secure it and while doing so, he fell into an open elevator shaft. He died from his injuries one month later.

On February 9, 1919 while checking his beat, Officer Patrick F. Cannon found an open door at the Hubinger Building on Chapel Street. He then went into the darkened building to locate the janitor in an attempt to have him secure it and while doing so the officer fell into an open elevator shaft. As a result of his injuries Officer Cannon died on March 5, 1919.
