Patrolman McGovern was the first New Haven policeman to die as results of a traffic accident. While performing traffic duty, he was struck and killed by a passing trolley car.

Patrolman Patrick McGovern was the first New Haven policeman to die as results of a traffic accident. On July 2, 1901 while performing traffic duty on Grand Avenue near East Street he was struck and killed by a passing trolley car.

Officer McGovern was buried in the family plot at St. Lawrence Cemetery.
