Constable Madden was gunned down while making an arrest of a gang of Silk Thieves from New Jersey.

William F. Madden was a sworn officer of the Town of Manchester and acting in that capacity when he was killed on January 30, 1919. Constable Madden was working at Cheney Mills and was gunned down while making an arrest of a gang of Silk Thieves from New Jersey. Accompanying Constable Madden was Special Officer Clifton Macomber, of the Manchester Police Department.
